Rolling Stone: The Spill, The Scandal and the President
Like the attacks by Al Qaeda, the disaster in the Gulf was preceded by ample warnings – yet the administration had ignored them. Instead of cracking down on MMS, as he had vowed to do even before taking office, Obama left in place many of the top officials who oversaw the agency’s culture of corruption. He permitted it to rubber-stamp dangerous drilling operations by BP – a firm with the worst safety record of any oil company – with virtually no environmental safeguards, using industry-friendly regulations drafted during the Bush years. He calibrated his response to the Gulf spill based on flawed and misleading estimates from BP – and then deployed his top aides to lowball the flow rate at a laughable 5,000 barrels a day, long after the best science made clear this catastrophe would eclipse the Exxon Valdez.
Historiann: An organic cotton layette of one’s own? (Srsly?)
What was the store owner going for with this maneuver of naming her baby store after a famous non-mother? There aren’t all that many famous English women writers who were also mothers, alas–The Brontes, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, and even the famously twee Beatrix Potter all were confirmed non-mothers. Mary Wollstonecraft’s motherhood famously put an early end to her life…My guess is that the famous writer in question would be horrified to see her name repurposed to sell high-end nursery gear. What I find really fascinating about this–even moreso than the Rebel Lettriste–is the erasure of feminism and also the retro-application of motherhood.
Flip Flopping Joy: Helen Thomas
I don’t have one tiny single qualm or problem with Helen Thomas saying Jews need to go home. She is an Arab woman whose family was forced to leave their homeland. She, like me, wakes up every day, still the child of border crossers. Immigrants. Homeless. She is an Arab woman who knows that Palestinians are not “equal” with citizens of a racist colonial state. She knows that Palestinians have the right to live. When she says Jews need to go home, she is saying Palestinians have the right to live. She is not saying jews must die. She is saying Palestinians have the right to live.
Echidne of the Snakes: The Florida Shootings
The murdered women were Liazan Molina, 24, the estranged wife of the killer, Maysel Figueroa, 32, Lavina M. Fonseca, 47 and Zaida Castillo, 56. Those in critical condition are Yasmin Dominguez, 38, Ivet Coronado Fernandez and Mayra de la Caridad Lopez, 55. It is to the credit of these news sources that they point out the gender-specific victim selection. But none of them moves to the obvious next point: Why did this murderer choose to kill women? What is the motive behind that?
Deeply Problematic: Transgender is an adjective. Not a noun. Or a verb!
Using transgender as a noun is occasionally an ignorant, symptomatic mistake made by a careless writer. But more often, it’s an indicator of more issues: transgender or cross-dressing male to describe trans women, a she where a he is needed. It is indicative of a pattern of dehumanization, of degendering. How can a writer too lazy to check the AP style manual or question their own use of nouns and pronouns be trusted to write about trans issues?
