Arizona Senator Russell Pearce, the man behind SB1070, now has his sights set on the children of undocumented immigrants. In emails obtained by KPHO, Pearce writes, “If we are going to have an effect on the anchor baby racket, we need to target the mother. Call it sexist, but that’s the way nature made it. Men don’t drop anchor babies, illegal alien mothers do.”
I’ve already been seeing red regarding the “anchor baby” term for the past few days because of a conversation I read on another website. It’s a derogatory, dehumanizing term [a post on that is forthcoming].
Yeah, Pearce: I’m going to call you sexist. And racist. It’s disgusting–and disingenuous–to refer to an anchor baby “racket,” and it’s disgusting that he wants to target illegal alien immigrant mothers. Worst of all is that Pearce absolves men of all “blame” (as if starting or expanding a family is something that one can be “blamed” for), while immigrant mothers are blamed for being the conniving masterminds who pave the way for the invasion of the brown people. It’s a classic textbook case of a Nativist painting the immigrant woman as little more than a breeder.*
Pearce holds a narrow-minded view that fails to encompass the full spectrum of immigrant motherhood, from struggling mothers who came to the US in search of a better future for her children, to women who were forced to become mothers because they were raped while crossing over. In his warped, hateful world, only “illegal alien mothers” who “drop anchor babies” exist.
*An excellent book on contemporary perpetuation of this imagery is Otto Santa Ana’s Brown Tide Rising.
