¡Ándale! ¡Ándale! ¡Arriba! ¡Arriba!

Today in Hollywood adaptations: they’re making a Speedy Gonzalez movie.  And Speedy will be voiced by George Lopez.

Sigh.  George.  No!

In an all too telling quote from the Reporter article, George’s wife Ann, who will produce the film along with her husband, quipped, “We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s — the racist Speedy. Speedy’s going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he’s a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he’s good at.”

George.  Didn’t you once joke that Mexicans who ate at Taco Bell should be ashamed of themselves?*  This is kind of like that.  Because even setting aside the controversy over the fact that historically, Speedy was a racist stereotype of the lazy, short, sombrero-wearing Mexican male:**  IS HOLLYWOOD THAT PRESSED FOR IDEAS?

Stop with these remakes and “reboots” already!!!

*Full Disclosure #1: I eat at Taco Smell. Kinda gross, I know.

** Full Disclosure #2: I grew up watching Speedy Gonzalez cartoons.
