Hispanics Keep Out

Vodpod videos no longer available.

For the moment, let’s set aside the fact that this woman is using the term “Hispanic” (*shudder*), and let’s agree that she is perfectly within her first amendment rights to say/post whatever the hell she wants on her property, yes?

Her sign is still an echo of these moments in history.  The fact that this type blatant racism still exists in post-racial America does not shock or surprise me.  The sad thing is, look how perfectly she embodies the results of anti-immigrant paranoia and racism.

This woman is a living example just how synonymous Hispanic “Latin@” has become with “illegal.”  She doesn’t care that her sign upsets some people, because she’s “upset about [Latin@s] coming over here illegally, too.” She goes on to emphatically say, “This is our privilege as an American [sic] to protect our property.  This is our property.”  When the reporter asks her why she doesn’t just put up a general KEEP OUT sign, the woman again is emphatic in saying that she doesn’t want to keep everybody out, just certain people.

To this woman, all Latin@s are immigrants and/or miscreants, and all immigrants/miscreants are illegals undocumented immigrants.  I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to imagine that “our property” stands for both her home and the entire United States.

Which brings us to the media’s role in all of this.  There are, of course, the usual suspects: Malkin, Dobbs, O’Reilly, Beck, Savage, Coulter, Limbaugh…the list can go on forever.  But the liberal media isn’t exactly innocent.  Though they’re not as blunt as Lou Dobbs or Tom Tancredo, they still print and say thinly veiled racist commentary.

What’s wrong with the first paragraph on this NY Times article from last year?:

MILTON, Fla. — Three months after the local police inspected more than a dozen businesses searching for illegal immigrants using stolen Social Security numbers, this community in the Florida Panhandle has become more law-abiding, emptier and whiter.

What about this USA Today headline?

This Reuters one?

(Personally, I’m in favor of Spring Breaker Flu and Colonialism Cough.)

The whole Latin@s = immigrants / immigrants = illegal + dirty + criminal schtick is everywhere.  It’s pervasive.

Post-racial America my ass.
