The Undomestic Goddess: More on New Year Resolutions
It’s almost the turn of the year. Here are my resolutions:
1. Think before I say things and act.
2. Follow my diet. Hardly any sweets. Half my lunch. Run for at least 15 min. per day.
3. Listen at all times during school and do homework first thing when I get home from school.*The bold is mine.
At the time of this writing I was 9 years old.
Washington Monthly: Revisionaries: How a group of Texas conservatives is rewriting your kids’ textbooks
Battles over textbooks are nothing new, especially in Texas, where bitter skirmishes regularly erupt over everything from sex education to phonics and new math. But never before has the board’s right wing wielded so much power over the writing of the state’s standards. And when it comes to textbooks, what happens in Texas rarely stays in Texas.
On the Issues: The Next Seven Generations: Reclaiming Healthy Sexuality for Native Youth
So what is our reality today? First Nations youth are among the fastest growing populations across Canada and the United States. At 15 to 24 years, we are the most impacted by domestic violence, as well as having the highest rate of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We also have one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy, no doubt related notably lower use of condoms. Culturally-insensitive, “one-size-fits all,” or nonexistent sexuality education programs do not use relevant traditional knowledge in teaching Native youth about their own bodies.
Women & Hollywood: Does Having a Vagina Make You a Female Director?
There are men who direct movies that have more of a female sensibility like Ken Kwapis (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, He’s Just Not That Into You) and Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook, My Sister’s Keeper) and NOBODY ask if they are a male director. Why is it when a woman ventures out of the safety of girlworld does her gender get talked about over and over but the same conversation never happens to the guys?
